The South African Hoodia Gordonii Cactus is known by many names.

The South African Hoodia Gordonii Cactus is known by many names. It is called xshoba or xhooba by the San Bushmen who have used it to treat indigestion, minor skin infections and as an appetite and thirst suppressant during long hunts. The scientific name is Hoodia Gordonii. It is actually a succulent so the names Hoodia cactus and South African desert cactus are actually misnomers, but they are commonly used. The plant resembles a cactus when seen growing wild in the Kalahari Desert.

There are problems associated with growing the South African Hoodia cactus for commercial purposes. First, logically, is temperature. In order to thrive the Hoodia cactus requires desert like temperatures. Second is time. It takes four or five years for the African Hoodia Gordonii cactus to reach full maturity. Quantities of the wild plant are extremely limited and are protected by the governments of South Africa from harvesting. Phytopharm, the first company to research the properties of the African hoodia cactus, has established plantations in South Africa, but will not begin to sell their patented product for at least a couple of years.

It is important to note that there are more than twenty different varieties of hoodia, but only Hoodia Gordonii is believed to contain the natural appetite suppressant. Some companies may be selling products that are purported to contain the African hoodia cactus, but if it is not Hoodia Gordonii, then it may not work. As with all health supplements, it is best to buy hoodia products from a reputable company that sells a complete line of products. In addition, dieters are advised to remember to drink plenty of water since hoodia suppresses thirst, as well as appetite.

By any name, the African hoodia cactus is a beautiful plant. Flowers are pale purple and appear after the plant reaches maturity. Even though dieters would love to have a large immediate supply, it is important to protect the wild African hoodia cactus from over-harvesting, so that it can be enjoyed by future generations.

(CBS) Each year, people spend more than $40 billion on products designed to help them slim down. None of them seem to be working very well.

Now along comes hoodia. Never heard of it? Soon it'll be tripping off your tongue, because hoodia is a natural substance that literally takes your appetite away.

It's very different from diet stimulants like Ephedra and Phenfen that are now banned because of dangerous side effects. Hoodia doesn't stimulate at all. Scientists say it fools the brain by making you think you're full, even if you've eaten just a morsel. Correspondent Lesley Stahl reports.

"Hoodia, a plant that tricks the brain by making the stomach feel full, has been in the diet of South Africa's Bushmen for thousands of years."

Because the only place in the world where hoodia grows wild is in the Kalahari Desert of South Africa.

Nigel Crawhall, a linguist and interpreter, hired an experienced tracker named Toppies Kruiper, a local aboriginal Bushman, to help find it. The Bushmen were featured in the movie "The Gods Must Be Crazy."

Kruiper led 60 Minutes crews out into the desert. Stahl asked him if he ate hoodia. "I really like to eat them when the new rains have come," says Kruiper, speaking through the interpreter. "Then they're really quite delicious."

When we located the plant, Kruiper cut off a stalk that looked like a small spiky pickle, and removed the sharp spines. In the interest of science, Stahl ate it. She described the taste as "a little cucumbery in texture, but not bad."

So how did it work? Stahl says she had no after effects - no funny taste in her mouth, no queasy stomach, and no racing heart. She also wasn't hungry all day, even when she would normally have a pang around mealtime. And, she also had no desire to eat or drink the entire day. "I'd have to say it did work," says Stahl.

Although the West is just discovering hoodia, the Bushmen of the Kalahari have been eating it for a very long time. After all, they have been living off the land in southern Africa for more than 100,000 years.

Some of the Bushmen, like Anna Swartz, still live in old traditional huts, and cook so-called Bush food gathered from the desert the old-fashioned way.

The first scientific investigation of the plant was conducted at South Africa's national laboratory. Because Bushmen were known to eat hoodia, it was included in a study of indigenous foods.

"What they found was when they fed it to animals, the animals ate it and lost weight," says Dr. Richard Dixey, who heads an English pharmaceutical company called Phytopharm that is trying to develop weight-loss products based on hoodia.

Was hoodia's potential application as an appetite suppressant immediately obvious?

"No, it took them a long time. In fact, the original research was done in the mid 1960s," says Dixey.

It took the South African national laboratory 30 years to isolate and identify the specific appetite-suppressing ingredient in hoodia. When they found it, they applied for a patent and licensed it to Phytopharm.

Phytopharm has spent more than $20 million so far on research, including clinical trials with obese volunteers that have yielded promising results. Subjects given hoodia ended up eating about 1,000 calories a day less than those in the control group. To put that in perspective, the average American man consumes about 2,600 calories a day; a woman about 1,900.

"If you take this compound every day, your wish to eat goes down. And we've seen that very, very dramatically," says Dixey.

But why do you need a patent for a plant? "The patent is on the application of the plant as a weight-loss material. And, of course, the active compounds within the plant. It's not on the plant itself," says Dixey.

So no one else can use hoodia for weight loss? "As a weight-management product without infringing the patent, that's correct," says Dixey.

But what does that say about all these weight-loss products that claim to have hoodia in it? Trimspa says its X32 pills contain 75 mg of hoodia. The company is pushing its product with an ad campaign featuring Anna Nicole Smith, even though the FDA has notified Trimspa that it hasn't demonstrated that the product is safe.

Some companies have even used the results of Phytopharm's clinical tests to market their products.

"This is just straightforward theft. That's what it is. People are stealing data, which they haven't done, they've got no proper understanding of, and sticking on the bottle," says Dixey. "When we have assayed these materials, they contain between 0.1 and 0.01 percent of the active ingredient claimed. But they use the term hoodia on the bottle, of course, so they -- does nothing at all."

But Dixey isn't the only one who's felt ripped off. The Bushmen first heard the news about the patent when Phytopharm put out a press release. Roger Chennells, a lawyer in South Africa who represents the Bushmen, who are also called "the San," was appalled.

"The San did not even know about it," says Chennells. "They had given the information that led directly toward the patent."

The taking of traditional knowledge without compensation is called "bio-piracy."

"You have said, and I'm going to quote you, 'that the San felt as if someone had stolen the family silver,'" says Stahl to Chennells. "So what did you do?"

"I wouldn't want to go into some of the details as to what kind of letters were written or what kind of threats were made," says Chennells. "We engaged them. They had done something wrong, and we wanted them to acknowledge it."

Chennells was determined to help the Bushmen who, he says, have been exploited for centuries. First they were pushed aside by black tribes. Then, when white colonists arrived, they were nearly annihilated.

"About the turn of the century, there were still hunting parties in Namibia and in South Africa that allowed farmers to go and kill Bushmen," says Chennells. "It's well documented."

The Bushmen are still stigmatized in South Africa, and plagued with high unemployment, little education, and lots of alcoholism. And now, it seemed they were about to be cut out of a potential windfall from hoodia. So Chennells threatened to sue the national lab on their behalf.

"We knew that if it was successful, many, many millions of dollars would be coming towards the San," says Chennells. "Many, many millions. They've talked about the market being hundreds and hundreds of millions in America."

In the end, a settlement was reached. The Bushmen will get a percentage of the profits -- if there are profits. But that's a big if.

The future of hoodia is not yet a sure thing. The project hit a major snag last year. Pharmaceutical giant Pfizer, which had teamed up with Phytopharm, and funded much of the research, dropped out when making a pill out of the active ingredient seemed beyond reach.

Dixey says it can be made synthetically: "We've made milligrams of it. But it's very expensive. It's not possible to make it synthetically in what's called a scaleable process. So we couldn't make a metric ton of it or something that is the sort of quantity you'd need to actually start doing something about obesity in thousands of people."

Phytopharm decided to market hoodia in its natural form, in diet shakes and bars. That meant it needed the hoodia plant itself.

But given the obesity epidemic in the United States, it became obvious that what was needed was a lot of hoodia - much more than was growing in the wild in the Kalahari. And so they came here.

60 Minutes visited one of Phytopharm's hoodia plantations in South Africa. They'll need a lot of these plantations to meet the expected demand.

Agronomist Simon MacWilliam has a tall order: grow a billion portions a year of hoodia, within just a couple of years. He admitted that starting up the plantation has been quite a challenge.

"The problem is we're dealing with a novel crop. It's a plant we've taken out of the wild and we're starting to grow it,' says MacWilliam. "So we have no experience. So it's different? diseases and pests which we have to deal with."

How confident are they that they will be able to grow enough? "We're very confident of that," he says. "We've got an expansion program which is going to be 100s of acres. And we'll be able - ready to meet the demand.

This could be huge, given the obesity epidemic. Phytopharm says it's about to announce marketing plans that will have meal-replacement hoodia products on supermarket shelves by 2008.

MacWilliam says these products are a slightly different species from the hoodia Stahl tasted in the Kalahari Desert. "It's actually a lot more bitter than the plant that you tasted," says MacWilliam.

The advantage is this species of hoodia will grow a lot faster. But more bitter? How bad could it be? Stahl decided to find out. "Not good," she says.

Phytopharm says that when its product gets to market, it will be certified safe and effective. They also promise that it'll taste good.

Maca Increases Libido

Historical or traditional use (may or may not be supported by scientific studies) Maca root has been an important food for the native people in the Andes of Peru, including the Incas, for at least 2,000 years.1 It is eaten baked, dried, mixed with milk, or in a variety of other forms and dishes. It is also traditionally believed to enhance strength, endurance, libido, and fertility.

Active constituents: Maca contains substantial quantities of protein, fat, fiber, and minerals including iron, which also contribute to its nutritional value. It also contains glucosinolates, the strong-smelling compounds that are responsible for the pungent smell and taste of mustard family plants. Neither these nor any other constituents in maca have definitively been shown to contribute to its actions.

Preliminary studies have shown that maca can increase libido in healthy men. It does this without influencing levels of testosterone or any other sex hormones. Healthy men who take maca have also been shown to have increased semen volume, increased sperm counts, and enhanced sperm motility.

Numerous animal studies show that maca extracts can increase sex drive and improve fertility. Other studies support that it can relieve the negative effects of stress reactions. The red cultivar, though not the black or cream, also reduced enlarged prostates in rats.

Herbal Sex Boosters

Woody Allen's late 1970s film Love and Death was eerily prophetic, if in name alone, about the Viagra dilemma. The drug enables many men to achieve an erection and regain lost sexual function, but it can also exact a stiff penalty from users. The Food and Drug Administration has reported dozens of deaths among Viagra users. This seems an unnecessarily severe side effect. Concerns about the drug have spurred interest in effective, natural aphrodisiacs without deleterious side effects. Responding to this interest, I set off for the Amazon rain forest in search of sex-enhancing plants. I traveled in the company of a Brazilian shaman named Bernie Peixoto, a man skilled in tribal wisdom and the use of plant medicines. There in the world's greatest jungle, we encountered two potent sex-boosting plants with a long history of safe use.

Our flight into Brazil put us into the Amazon city of Manaus, where we met with Antonio Matas, the most highly respected herbalist in that area. Antonio shared stories with us about his decades of healing work using rain-forest plants.

Catuaba and Muirapuama: Sex Enhancers?

"What about catuaba and muirapuama?" I inquired. "Are they really effective sex enhancers, or is that just a myth?" He laughed at the question and spread his hands wide open. "There is nothing that compares with catuaba and muirapuama together. I can tell you, I have used these plants with hundreds of people. The old become sexually young again. I have seen impotent men who can have sex for the first time in years. Even healthy couples find that these plants put extra fire in their sex life. These plants are good for men and women."

I asked Antonio if he used these plants himself. He smiled again. "Sometimes. After all, I've been married to the same woman for 43 years."

How to Lose Stubborn Belly Fat - 2 Secrets to Make You Sexy

By Tom Gifford

If you are like most people, you have been looking for a "miracle" way on how to lose stubborn belly fat.

Finding great information on how to lose stubborn belly fat is can be a tough thing. You are constantly bombarded by information about the latest and great way to lose stubborn belly fat.

In your efforts to lose stubborn belly fat, have you tried weight watchers, zone diet, atkins diet, south beach diet, etc.? If so, did they work? I can probably answer that question for you by saying yes and no. Yes, it worked at first, but then you went back to your old ways.

When most people being a diet to lose stubborn belly fat, more often than not it works great in the beginning because they are excited and enthusiastic. But when those emotions begin to wear off after a few weeks, it is very easy to start cheating on your diet.

One of the main flaws of this approach to losing stubborn belly fat is that it is what I call a "kind of" way of diet. After being on the fad diet for a few weeks, your diet goes from being great to just "kind of" good. Once you get to this "kind of" stage, the quality of food and the overall number of calories is likely to change for the worse.

I am not going to tell you how important diet is to losing stubborn belly fat because you already know that. But if you had some tools to help you other than just with diet, you will likely see faster and more permanent results.

What I want to show you in this article is how exercising can be the missing link to losing stubborn belly fat.

The main goal for exercise to lose stubborn belly fat comes down to these 3 things:

1. Burning calories

2. Increasing your metabolism

3. Adding lean muscle mass

We can accomplish these three goals and finally start to lose stubborn belly fat if you combine two key elements of exercise: circuit strength training and interval training.

1. Strength training in a "circuit"

Strength training is a great way to lose stubborn belly fat because it adds lean muscle mass. This will increase your metabolism and help you to burn more calories while exercise and while at rest.

If you do not strength train at all in your quest to lose stubborn belly fat, you are denying yourself of amazing results!

Strength training in a circuit means that you keep moving from exercise to exercise. You do not do 10 reps then rest for a minute, then do 10 more. Instead, you do 10-15 reps of one exercise, then go to another, then another, etc. This keeps you moving and burns a lot of calories!

2. Interval training instead of boring "same speed" cardio

Have you ever gone to the gym and and gotten on a cardio machine for 30-60 minutes at the same speed? If so, your efforts to lose stubborn belly fat are suffering!

Yes, you can lose stubborn belly fat by doing this. But, this type of cardio does nothing to increase your metabolism! The more your body adapts, the longer and harder your session has to be to keep challening yourself.

A better way to lose stubborn belly fat with cardio is called interval training. It involves alternating between high and low intensities. Here is an example:

5 minutes: warm up

2 minutes: slow

30 secs-1 min: fast (repeat slow/fast interval 3-6 times)

5-10 minutes: cool down

This shortens your overall time, and it is a lot more fun than same speed cardio. Best of all, the high intensity periods are great for raising your metabolism, and in turn helping you to lose stubborn belly fat!

Remember that losing stubborn belly fat does not have to be a challenge. If you combine this type of workout routine 3 times per week with a great diet, your results should be all but guaranteed!

Your safety should always come first, so be sure to check with a medical doctor before beginning an exercise program.

Recharge And Relax At Work With These Simple Techniques

By Jez Heath

Our busy lifestyles and work demands mean that we often find it difficult to exercise our bodies as frequently as we should. This leads to tiredness, stress and reduced work performance.

However taking a short break to complete a few simple yoga postures at your desk can help to relieve stress and tiredness and refresh you for another work session.

To help you reduce the effects of working long hours at a desk or in front of a computer, Total.Yoga.Practice suggests you periodically perform 2 simple yoga practices at your desk. The following is the second practice, visit Total.Yoga.Practice for the first practice.

Office yoga - part 2

Take a moment to clear your mind. Be conscious of your thoughts and how they erratically pop into and out of your mind. Actively still your mind by focusing on your breathing. Vigorously rub your hands together until you feel warmth on your palms. Place your hands on your face with your palms cupping your eyes and your fingers on your forehead. Open your eyes into your cupped hands and keep your body and mind still for a few moments.

Nadi Shodhana (alternate breathing)

Sit comfortably in your chair with your back straight. Hold your right hand in front of your face with the middle two fingers resting between your eyebrows. Your thumb should be above your right nostril and your ring finger above the left. Close your right nostril with your thumb and breathe in slowly and silently through your left nostril, until your lungs are full without straining. Release the right nostril and close the left nostril with your ring finger. Exhale through the right nostril slowly, keeping the duration of the exhale the same as the inhale. Inhale slowly through the right nostril. Release the left nostril and close the right nostril with your thumb while you exhale. Repeat the sequence 10 times making sure that your breathing is silent. This Pranayama is good for relaxing your mind.

Pandanguli Naman (Toe curling)

Sit upright in your chair with your back straight. With your feet on the ground, shoes off, inhale as you stretch the toes of both feet backward away from the floor. Exhale as you stretch your toes downwards to make fists with your feet. Hold each position for several breaths as you feel the stretch. Repeat 10 times.

Goolf Naman (Ankles bending)

Still sitting erect with your legs slightly extended, heels on the floor. Inhale as you bend at the ankle pulling the feet back towards your leg. Exhale as you push the foot forward trying to touch the floor. Hold each position as you feel the stretch. Repeat 10 times.

Goolf Chakra (Ankle rotation)

In the seated position with your legs slightly extended, heels on the floor. Starting with the right foot, keep the leg still as you rotate the foot at the ankle clockwise 10 times. Rotate 10 times in the opposite direction. Repeat with the left foot.
Next rotate both feet together in a clockwise direction 10 times. Repeat, rotating 10 times in an anti-clockwise direction.
Try rotating both feet at the same time, but in different directions, clockwise with the right foot, anti-clockwise with the left foot. Repeat, with the right foot rotating anti-clockwise and the left foot rotating clockwise.
Throughout the exercise, inhale as the foot is rising, exhale as the foot in falling.

Janu Naman (Knee bending)

In the seated position, clasp your hands under the right thigh, raise and straighten the leg keeping your spine straight. Bend and contract the leg bringing the knee towards your chest, and heel towards your buttocks. Straighten the leg. Repeat 10 times and switch to the left leg and repeat 10 times. Inhale while straightening the leg, exhale as you bend the leg.

Seated forward bend

Sit with your back straight and your knees together. Bend forward allowing your head to move close to your knees. Remain in the bend for the count of ten as you relax all the muscles in your back. Breathe normally through your nose. This posture helps to relieve tension from your back.

Meru Wakrasana (Spinal Twist) - variation

Sit with your spine straight and your knees together. Keep your legs facing forwards and both buttocks on the chair as you slowly rotate your upper body to the right. Start the twist with your abdomen then chest, shoulders and neck as you look behind you over your right shoulder. Once you start the twist you may hold the back of the chair with your left hand to assist the twist, but with care not to over twist. Twist your spine as far as is comfortable and hold for the count of 10 as you breathe slowly through your nose. Repeat the spinal twist to the left.

Bent knee leg lift

Turn sideways in the chair so you can hold the back of the chair for support. With the legs bent, and without holding your legs, lift your feet off the ground and pull your knees close to your chest, without leaning forwards. Pull your knees towards the chest for the count of 10 while you breathe normally through your nose. Release your feet to the floor and relax for the count of 10. Repeat 3 times.

The Extraordinary Source of Divine Powers or Shakti

By Shriram Sharma

In the previous pages it has been mentioned that Gayatri is not some Goddess, ghost etc. but is Adi Shakti that has manifested from Brahman or God. Gayatri is the root cause or substratum of all material objects and because of its existence there is movement, energy, advancement, inspiration and conversion in the inert-conscious world. Just as the machine called radio in one’s house contacts the all-pervasive ether vibrations in the cosmos, which helps one to hear radio broadcasts not only of one’s own country but of other countries too. Similarly when the soul force of an individual comes in contact with the all-pervasive Gayatri of the cosmos, it understands clearly the movements of subtle nature. And when one learns how to aptly utilize this subtle Divine Energy as per one’s will, one can attain all wealth pertaining to the material world, psyche and the soul. The path that leads to this wealth is called Gayatri worship.

Many people opine that since our goal is attaining God, vision of the soul and liberation while yet living, why should we delve into the subtle nature of Gayatri? We should only worship God. Deep thinkers should understand that Brahman (God in his all-pervasive soul form) is taintless, untouched, pure, formless and beyond the 3 Gunas. Such a God neither loves anyone nor hates anyone. He is merely a witness and cause of his creation. One can never directly attain such a formless God because between God and the living being (Jeeva) there is the intense veil of subtle nature (energy). In order to go beyond this intense veil we will have to make apt use of materials of nature. The mind, intellect, psyche, ego, imagination, meditation, subtle body, 6 Chakras (plexuses), image of our beloved God, devotion, sacred sentiments, worship, vows, rituals, spiritual practices are all creations of Maya (God’s power of illusion). How can one attain the formless God without taking apt help of all these? Just as in order to fly in air we need an air plane, in the same way, in order to attain the formless God (Brahman) we will have to take help of basic spiritual practices. One can attain formless God only after going beyond this veil via Gayatri worship. The truth is this that the experience of realization takes place only in the womb of Gayatri. After raising oneself spiritually, one’s subtle sense organs and its experiential power, too disappear. Hence those who wish to attain God and salvation are known to worship the admixture of Gayatri and formless God in the forms of Radhey-Shyam, Seeta-Ram, Lakshmi-Narayan etc. A spiritual aspirant can fully merge with the formless God when the formless God desires to become “one from many” and thus he encompasses all individual souls into its single formless nature. Before this, all individual souls can only attain proximity, similar form and unity with a God who has a name and form i.e. Saguna Brahman. In this manner we are forced to worship the admixture of Gayatri with Brahman having a name and form. All those spiritual practices that help in attaining such a God will be via the subtle natured Gayatri. Hence it is not apt to think that in order to attain the formless Brahman, there is no need of Gayatri worship. In fact Gayatri worship is a must. If someone insists on ignoring or opposing a God with name and form know for sure that that is his own opinion. But it is impossible to ignore the Gayatri principle when one sets off to attain the formless God.

Many individuals say that we carry out spiritual practices ceaselessly. We do not desire any fruits of our actions and hence why should we take help of subtle nature? Such people should realize that although they have no desire for material benefits, yet they do have the desire to attain God. One can never perform any action without thinking of its results. Even if one gets something, the result will be nothing but a waste of time and energy. The meaning of true desire less action is with reference to divine Sattva Guna and spiritual desires. Such pure desires come in the first leg “Hreem” of Gayatri i.e. in the Saraswati category. Hence the worship of desire less sentiments is not outside the limit of Gayatri worship.

Scientists who have substantial knowledge of the Science of Mantra-chanting know that it is chanted via the various organs of throat, palate, lips, teeth, base of the tongue etc. When one chants a Mantra, the nerve fibers of all those organs that manifest its sound, spread out in all corners of the body. In this widespread area are present many glands which get influenced by the pure sound vibrations of Mantra chanting. When these subtle glands of an individual are diseased or have been destroyed, the Mantra chanting of such individuals is not smooth and this is called stammering. The body has many small/big, visible/invisible glands. Great Yogis fully understand that in those sheaths there are many special hidden storehouses of energy. The 6 Chakras (plexuses) pertaining to the Sushumna (subtle spinal region) are well-known and there are many glands too in the body. The chanting of various words (Mantras) influences these varied glands and thus the hidden storehouse of energy in these glands get activated. It is on this basis that Mantras have been designed. There are 24 letters in the Gayatri Mantra. It is related to those 24 glands in the body which when activated, radiate energies pertaining to light of pure thinking. By one-pointedly chanting the Gayatri Mantra, the guitar of the body starts giving off sound vibrations in 24 areas and such tunes emanate, which influence the important elements of the subtle world. This very influence is the casual influence of the fruits of Gayatri worship.

When you sing the Deepak Raag (an Indian classical music tune), a doused flamed lamp is re-lit; by singing the tune Megh-Malhaar we can get rain. With the sound of flute, snakes starting dancing, deer lose their consciousness due to ecstasy and cows give more milk. When one hears a cuckoo singing, our sexual passion is awakened. America’s Dr. Hutchinson gained fame when he succeeded in curing many incurable and painful diseases using music therapy. Indian Tantriks play on a Thaali (big steel plate) placed on a big pot with a special speed and this helps in curing patients who have been afflicted by ghosts or bitten by venomous creatures etc. The reason being that the vibrations of musical words take with it subtle nature along with atoms of its own kind so as to circumambulate ether and reach its substratum center. Over there one finds a special electrical force which tends to influence diseased parts under special circumstances. Similarly this is the very reason why Mantra chanting too gives amazing results. When one chants the Gayatri Mantra, a similar special energy manifests. While chanting the Gayatri Mantra 2 parts of the mouth are at work and it is over here that subtle nerve fibers activate some special glands. When vibrations are sent out from these areas, a cyclic Yogic music of Vedic meter flows in the ether principle and in a few moments bring back the army of its similar nature which in turn has returned after having circumambulated the cosmos. This helps us attain desired goals. The 5 elemental (material) flows of the powerful vibrations of word-music and the sentiment, spiritual endeavor, relationship based on worship of the subtle nature of soul force makes Gayatri Energy so powerful that it is a great blessing for its devotees.

Man’s body has untold extraordinary powers. This fact has now been accepted by modern day scientists too. These energies are under the control of certain glands/centers of the human body. Every letter of the Gayatri Mantra helps in influencing one or the other important centers of energy. Just as when you place your finger on a key of a typewriter and a specific letter gets typed, in the same way certain words influence the energy centers of our body. Following is a table that enumerates the relationship of every letter of the Gayatri Mantra corresponding to a bodily gland and its energy.

Gayatri activates the above mentioned 24 energies in a spiritual aspirant. These qualities are so important that along with their activation, infinite number of prosperities, divine glories (Siddhis) and wealth is attained. Gayatri worship is not blind faith but is in fact a scientific mode of worship and one definitely benefits from it. Hence in Indian scriptures it is called the Kamadhenu (wish-fulfilling cow) of planet Earth.

In the Puranas (Indian Mythology) it is said that in heaven, the demigods possess the Kamadhenu cow. It gives nectarine milk and because the demigods drink it daily, they remain contented, happy and prosperous. This cow has a very special characteristic wherein if a person comes in its vicinity with some desire in his mind, those desires are immediately fulfilled like the proverbial Kalpvriksha (wish-fulfilling tree). Thus the Kamdhenu cow fulfills the desires of all who approach it.

This Kamadhenu cow is Gayatri. That man who worships the demigod of this Gayatri Mahashakti of divine nature will definitely get the chance to drink the spiritual milk of Gayatri Mata’s (mother’s) breast. Such a person will not face any hardships. The Soul is bliss manifest. Such a person’s character is full of bliss. As soon as sorrow is overcome, a person experiences his true soul nature. He realizes that he is the cosmic soul and not the physical body that has a limiting name and form. The demigods of heaven incessantly experience ecstasy. In the same way human beings too can experience soul bliss while dwelling on planet Earth if only all the causes of sorrow are destroyed. The Kamadhenu cow in the form of Gayatri worship helps mankind to overcome all hardships.

Popular Yoga Postures And Positions

By Shumam Fasi

The Cobra

It should be done in simple steps. You should lie down with the forehead on the floor legs and stretched back tightly together. Just beneath your shoulders put your hands and palm down. Pressing your neck backwards breathe in and raise your head, thereafter bend like an impressive arc from the lower spine to the back of your neck by moving your trunk upwards with the aid of your hand. There is no requirement to go any further. At any rate you can at present, totally straighten your arms, bend the legs at the knees and drop back your head to touch your feet provided you are flexible enough. Drop your head to its limit , holding on to the posture with deep breathing though your head does not go anywhere near your feet. Return to the posture with your face down as you come out of this very unhurriedly. With your head on one side relax and repeat thereafter.

The Bow

The simple bow is its more simplified version. Children can instantly do this which is quite astonishing. This should be taken in simple steps all over again. Lie on your mat with your face down. Get hold of a nice thick padded mat if you are very thin. By inhaling bend your knees upwards. Keeping your fingers and thumbs on the outside together, extend backwards with your arms and get hold of your ankles. By inhaling simultaneously raise your head and chest, lifting your knees and thighs of the floor and pulling at your ankles. Try to kick your legs higher and lift your head up by breathing normally. Leveling the weight of your body on the abdomen you are now bent like a bow. If however you can extend further , then slide your hands down your legs , lift them higher , and keeping the knees together pull back ,as much as you can or else you can stop right here. For a few normal deep breaths hold yourself then with the head to one side relax back to face down position.

The Shooting Bow

Here one leg is drawn up like a shooting bow and in Sanskrit this is called Akarna Dhanurasana. With both legs stretched out in front and back sit straight. Catch the right foot with the right hand and the left foot with the right one by reaching forward and clasping your feet. Twist you body to the right by breathing in by pulling the foot across the body, near your chest with the elbow pointed upwards. Holding the right foot the left hand stays firm and tight. Relax after holding posture with normal breathing and slow releasing. On the other side repeat thereafter. Holding the bent left leg with the right hand is enough in the beginning. Stretch down and hold the left foot with the right hand when this is easy. The pulling of the left leg should be continued and each exhalation lifts it higher.
