The Original Acupuncture

By Hotaka Sutton

As strange as it may sound, acupuncture today is not necessarily reflective of how it was less than 200 years ago. The Chinese communist regime threw a wrench in the process.

Much is made of the difference in Western style medicine and Traditional Chinese Medicine. Where Western medicine is seen as being more concerned with treating the disease, Traditional Chinese Medicine treats the person. While this is very true, it is important to note that there is a division within Chinese Medicine also. This difference is seen in the art of acupuncture. The classical form of acupuncture that developed over the centuries in China was known as 5 element acupuncture.

When the Communist government of China began to repress classical Chinese Medicine and deriding it as superstitious and old fashioned. The Chinese leaders felt that adherence to the old ways would hold back China from emerging as a World Power. When they decided that it was not possible nor in the best interest of the country to abandon their century old traditions, they still attempted to remove much of the spiritual part of the treatments. The resulting form of acupuncture which is now part of Traditional Chinese Medicine differs in many ways from the classical form of the past.

Classic acupuncture is concerned with the complete emotional and spiritual well being of the patient and not just the external symptoms of the disease. It attempts to treat the body, the mind, the heart, and the spirit in an attempt to restore natural harmony to the life of the patient. It is believed that once this harmony is restored good health will follow. Five Element acupuncture takes its name from the theory of five elements that is very much a part of the Chinese view of nature. The five elements are fire, earth, metal, water, and wood.

Each of these elements is present in some degree in every person. Although each person tends to be dominated by one particular element, they are all connected and interconnected with the person. It is by understanding these connections and any disharmony in them that a full diagnosis is reached. The natural harmony can then be restored through the application of needles, heat, pressure, and even massage to the proper acupuncture body points.

Each element is further associated with a season and an emotional state. Fire is the summer element and is connected to feelings of joy. Earth is the late summer element and sympathy is the emotion. Metal is the autumn element associated with grief. Water is the winter element involved with fear. Finally, wood is the spring element and is connected to the emotion of anger.

Fasting - The Miracle Of Juice Fasting

By Diwakar Vashist

Methods

The best, safest and most effective method of fasting is juice fasting. Although the old classic form of fasting was a pure water fasting, most of the leading authorities on fasting today agree that juice fasting is far superior to water fast. We can help this cleansing process by drinking alkaline juice instead of water while fasting. Elimination of uric acid and other inorganic acids will be accelerated and sugars in juices will strengthen the heart. Juice fasting is, therefore, the best form of fasting.”

Vitamins, minerals, enzymes and trace elements in fresh, raw vegetable and fruit juices are extremely beneficial in normalising all the body processes. They supply essential elements for the body’s own healing activity and cell regeneration and thus speeding the recovery. All juices should be prepared from fresh fruit immediately before drinking. Canned or frozen juices should not be used.

Benefits

Fasting is highly beneficial in practically all kinds of stomach and intestinal disorders and in serious conditions of the kidneys and liver. It is a miracle cure for eczema and other skin diseases and offers the only hope of permanent cure in many cases.
There are several benefits of Fasting

1. During a long fast, the body feeds upon its reserves.. Being deprived of needed nutrients, particularly of protein and fats, it will burn and digest its own tissues by the process of self-digestion. But it will not do so indiscriminately. The body will first decompose and burn those cells and tissues, which are diseases. Damaged, aged or dead. The essential tissues and vital organs, the glands, the nervous system and the brain are not damaged or digested in fasting. Here lies the secret of the effectiveness of fasting as a curative and remunerative method.

2. During fasting, the building of new and healthy cells is speeded up by the amino acids released from the diseased cells.

3. The capacity of the eliminative organs, that is, lungs, liver, kidneys ad the skin is greatly increased as they are relived of the usual burden of digesting food and eliminating the resultant wastes.

Fasting should, however, not be restored to in every illness. In cases of diabetes, advances stages of tuberculosis and extreme cases of neurasthenia, long fasts will be harmful. In Most cases, of neurasthenia, long fasts will be harmful.
Breaking of fast

The success of the fast depends largely on how it is broken. This is the most significant phase. The main rules for breaking the fast are: do not overeat, eat slowly and chew your food thoroughly: and take several days for the gradual change to the normal diet. If the transition to eating solid foods is carefully planned, there will be no discomfort or damage.

Role of Alternative Medicine in Modern Society

By Darren Dunner

Typically, alternative medicine differs from traditional medicine in that alternative medicine is older and what we might call unconventional or non-Western medicine. Alternative medicine does not follow the traditional science and research that current medicines undergo. Alternative medicine could also be termed complementary or traditional medicine or the therapies that can be integrated into current medicine. The staff of the National Library of Medicine of the United States classified alternative medicine under the category of complementary therapies in their Medical Subjects Heading Section. This was done in the year 2002. The definition provided was that alternative medicine therapeutic practices were not considered as an integral part of the traditional allopathic medicine. Therapies like acupuncture, dieting, physical therapy like exercises or yoga, etc. are termed as alternative medicine. These therapies are called complementary when they are used along with conventional treatments. If they are done in place of conventional treatments, they are known as alternative treatments.

In April 1995, the panel of National Institutes of Health, Bethesda, Maryland, worked on Definition & Description, CAM Research Methodology Conference, Office of Alternative Medicine. The panel defined alternative medicine and complementary medicine as those healing resources that encompass all health systems and practices that are different from the dominant health system of a particular society or culture. Usually, therapies like ayurveda, herbal medicine, folk medicine, homeopathy, acupuncture, naturopathy, diet practices, chiropractic, music therapy, massage, pranic healing, etc. are classified as alternative or complementary medicine. People who do not find a cure, remedy or success in allopathic medicine generally try alternative medicine. Such people generally suffer from cancer, arthritis, acquired immuno deficiency syndrome (AIDS), chronic back pain, etc. Therapies included under alternative medicine would cease to be included in that category once their efficacy is proven and they are considered safe and effective. They are then considered as part of traditional medicine. An example would be chiropractors. Twenty years ago insurance would not pay for them as they were considered "alternative and ineffective." Today thousands of people have been helped by chiropractors and they are now recognized in the medical community. A similar movement is underway in the nutritional supplement and nutraceutical industry.

Over the years, more and more people have been using alternative medicine because traditional medicine is not working for them. The 2004 survey by the National Center for Complementary & Alternative Medicine of the United States revealed that approximately 36% of Americans used alternative medicine in 2002. If alternative medicine is used in conjunction with traditional allopathic medicine, an integrative doctor is a person's best option. Some traditional doctors are adamantly against or simply do not believe in complementary medicine, even though research continues to show the benefits of many compounds. Your doctor should be informed about other approaches you may be using and if they are not comfortable with that then always feel free to choose another doctor. This would enable the doctor to foresee any possible complications or a better time in which to use a complementary therapy. The concern in using alternative medicine stems from the fact that some practitioners of alternative medicine do not have an accredited medical degree and therefore do not have a valid medical license. However, in recent times, many educational institutions and universities have started offering courses in homeopathy, ayurveda, siddha, unani, acupuncture, and naturopathy. The recent growth in this industry is evident by the many people demanding different, and in some cases better, care than what they are receiving in "modern medicine." They are no longer accepting the fact that they need to suffer with pain or illness because modern pharmacy does not have a magic bullet for them.

Ginger Root - An Herb With Medicinal Properties Used As An Alternative To Traditional Medicine

By Connie Ragen Green

Ginger root is an herb that has been used in a variety of ways as a healing agent for over 2000 years. It is thought to have medicinal properties that can be helpful to those suffering from a myriad of ailments, including arthritis, nausea, motion sickness, headaches, and perhaps even types of heart disease. In the United States the use of herbs as medicine is still considered as alternative, but in places such as China, the Caribbean, India, parts of Africa and Europe ginger is widely accepted as a healing herb.

The history of ginger is quite fascinating. The Sanskrit name for ginger is srngaveram, which translates to “horn root”. This is believed to be because of the appearance of the ginger root, which does bear a resemblance to an animal’s horn. At some point in history ginger disappeared, but it is thought that Marco Polo brought it back with him after his extensive travels and it then became a delicacy in Europe. Most of the supply of ginger comes from Jamaica, India, Africa, and China. Ginger grows in the wild in Jamaica and other islands of the Caribbean because the tropical climate offers the best growing conditions. Ginger in the wild produces flowers when the herb is at its most ripe stage. Queen Elizabeth I loved the taste of ginger and encouraged her cooks to experiment with it. The gingerbread man is said to have been the direct outcome of this experimentation.

Ginger has been used most commonly to treat gastrointestinal maladies such as nausea, abdominal bloating, diarrhea, uncontrollable vomiting, heartburn, intestinal gas resulting in excess flatulence, and colitis. Many believe that ginger can help with these ailments because it contains properties thought to strengthen the muscle tone in the intestinal tract.

Herbalists use ginger extract to decrease inflammation, which is a leading cause of many ailments including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, bronchitis, dermatitis, and ulcerative colitis. Studies are not at all conclusive, but many people prefer to use a natural remedy instead of taking ibuprofen or other traditional medication.

Use of ginger to treat motion sickness appears to be at least somewhat effective but more studies need to be conducted and analyzed. As far as heart disease is concerned, it is unclear whether or not ginger can be used successfully to lower cholesterol. It is simply to early to make an intelligent comment on this type of medicinal use of the herb.

Ginger appears as a knotted root with an underground stem known as a rhizome. It consists of volatile oils (somewhere between 1 and 4%), as well as pungent compounds known as gingerol and shogaol. It is these compounds that are thought to be responsible for the healing properties of ginger for nausea and vomiting.

You can find ginger in the produce department as a fresh or dried root. Ginger is also available as a powdered extract, in capsule form, or as an oil. You can use ginger to prepare a tea or use it as a cooking spice to prepare breads, cookies, or as an ingredient in vegetable dishes.

It is always wise to do your own research and talk to your physician before supplanting ginger, or any other spice or herb, with prescribed medications. Many health food stores have herbalists on staff that can also answer any additional questions you may have. As with all things in your life, moderation is the best choice. But when choosing spices that may also be medicinal, try using ginger as a healthy, natural alternative.
