COCOA EMPOWERMENT ~ Recent data from the United States Department of Agriculture indicates that cocoa powder and dark chocolate are highly concentrated sources of natural flavanols. In general the higher the cocoa content, the greater the antioxidant potential.
Scientific studies show that naturally occurring flavanoid compounds from cocoa beans may deliver health benefits. Flavanoids act as antioxidants and are found in high concentrations in all plants.
It takes 1-4 cups or more of plant matter to make 1 single drop of pure essential oil, making essential oils an extremely high antioxidant source.
VALENTINES LIP BALM & REPAIR BUTTER RECIPE (Makes about 2 ounces)
¼ CUP PURE LIGHT COCONUT OIL
1 TBSP (HEAPING) BEES WAX – less makes your lip balm softer, more harder
2 TBSP Semi-Sweet Dark Cocoa

OPTIONAL: Add a few drops of vitamin E oil
DIRECTIONS: Put the bees wax and semi-sweet dark cocoa into the pure light coconut oil and heat in a large glass measuring cup that sits inside of a large pot that’s been partially filled with water. Heat the pot of water on the stove until the bees wax and dark chocolate melts.
Remove the measuring cup with melted beeswax, dark chocolate and coconut oil from the pan. Cool slightly before adding your Essential Oils and Optional Vitamin E oil. Gently stir the mixture with a sterile stainless steel spoon.
Pour Valentines Chocolate Kiss Lip Balm into individual containers with lids and refrigerate. You may affix your own personalized label to each container after the balm has completely set. Long shelf life, keeps almost indefinitely!

Make Your Later Years Healthier And Happier

By Lin Macgregor
There are many ways in which people can take an active role in making their later years healthier and happier.
Studies have shown that older adults with positive attitudes, good nutrition, regular exercise, and social activities are more effective at avoiding or dealing with problems and crises in later life.
It is almost never too late to make positive changes in lifestyle to help maintain good health.
Nutritionists advise that older adults adopt a balanced, low-fat diet full of high-fiber foods, such as fresh fruits, vegetables, breads, and cereals.A low-fat, high-fiber diet is known to reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease and some forms of cancer. Some studies suggest that a diet rich in calcium may prevent or delay osteoporosis. There is also considerable evidence that a low-sodium diet can reduce the risk of hypertension.
Health professionals recommend that physical activity is also a key ingredient for healthy aging. Various kinds of physical activity can affect body shape, bone and muscle strength, flexibility, agility, balance, heart and lung endurance, and circulation.Physical activity can also reduce obesity, fatigue, and stress and can lift spirits.Physical activity lowers the risk of hypertension, heart attack, stroke, falls, some cancers, and late-onset diabetes, assists in weight control and lessens the disabling and painful impact of arthritis and other chronic diseases.
Many older adults have been physically active throughout their lives in their work, family roles, and in other pastimes such as gardening, dancing, and sports, even though they have never pursued a formal plan of exercise. Experts recommend that anyone intending to begin a new physical activity or program of exercise consult a physician or other health professional to help design a plan tailored to that person's abilities, health conditions, activity preferences, and goals.
Some people report that one of their greatest fears about aging is the loss of mental abilities, and, in particular, the development of dementia or Alzheimer's disease. In reality, only about 10 to 15 percent of people age 65 and over have an illness that affects the ability to think. Although researchers have found that many people do become a bit more forgetful (about recent events) at older ages, this process is usually so slow and gradual that it has very little effect on functioning in everyday life. Many studies show that memory can even be improved with training or practice. Active older people report that they plan for or compensate for what is called "benign forgetfulness" by using memory aids, such as making written lists and reminder notes, or putting prescription medicines in a sorting containerdesigned to help people keep track of multiple medications
Keep busy by pursuing hobbies, doing volunteer work, taking classes, and if possible visiting friends – never stop learning. How most people fare in old age may not be a matter of fate or genes but rather how they live.

Exercise Your Way to Good Health

By Alister Bredee
No, I don’t mean heavy duty external exercise like jogging, squash or convoluted muscle building workouts in the gym! We are no longer a hunter-gatherers so there is no need to build excessive muscle tone. There are exceptions to this of course, as indeed there are to everything! What I am talking about is gentle internal activities that improve breathing and increase blood circulation that allow the body to heal itself, which is all it ever does anyway!
The exercises that I am talking about are by no means new. They have been around for a very long time. They first came to light in the medical treatise that was put out by the Yellow Emperor, which is now approximately three thousand years old. The “Yellow Emperor’s Classic of Internal Medicine” takes the form of a discussion between the Yellow Emperor himself and six of his Ministers and runs to 24 volumes. In actuality this treatise is a culmination of all the knowledge the Chinese had accumulated regarding medicine and took its form in circa 250BC. It is the first medical text-book known to man. It was translated into English in 1949 at a time when the West was becoming increasingly interested in Chinese medial practices, notably acupuncture.
The founder of Taoism Lao Tse also mentions these exercises in “Tao Te Ching” which appeared much earlier than the Yellow Emperor’s work, so it seems they had even earlier adherents. My thinking is that if something like exercising one’s way back to health has been around for such a long time it must have value otherwise it would have been long forgotten. He called, the “Exercises of Revitalisation” the “foremost of therapies”. Today and have found new life in the “Do-In” clubs of Japan where members meet on a weekly or more frequent basis in order to work together and overcome the health problems they all face. In China the exercises are called “Chi-Kung” which translates in guess what, yes you’ve got it, “breathing and energising exercises!
Relatively recently Chinese Doctor Pao Lin published in the Gauolin Research Report a study he conducted using 2,873 supposedly terminal cancer patients. He used Chi-Kung exercises to treat these patients. Over a six month period 12% of the cancer sufferers demonstrated a complete remission of their symptoms, whilst a whopping 47% showed a considerable improvement. The remaining 41% seemed unchanged by their “revitalising exercise”. Still, I think a 59% improvement rate is very significant particularly as this was without recourse to drugs and surgery.
Coming a little closer to home in 1976 American Doctor Cecilia Rosenfeld experimented with the exercises herself. These were taught to her by California practitioner and author of “The Complete System of Self-Healing” Dr. Stephen Change who has studied both Western and Chinese medicine. As a results of her studies she experienced an almost immediate benefit from the exercises she learned from Dr. Chang. In fact she was so impressed she decided to “prescribe” them to her own patients. After only a week 80% showed overall improvement in their health condition. This prompted her to hire eight nurses who were in turn taught the “Revitalising Exercises”. Groups of patients were assigned to individual nurses. Again the results were stunning, with most demonstrating noticeable improvement without any side-effects or pain. The nurses themselves felt hugely empowered by spending their days demonstrating this energy based route to healing.
One nurse described her routine duties like this: “After working eight hours on our feet, we felt as if we were ready to die. But now we have started using the exercises a hundred times a day, we feel as if we are ready to jump through the roof at the end of the day!”
Sounds good doesn’t it? Perhaps you owe it to yourself to discover how “The Tao of Revitalisation” might help you overcome nagging health problems and then move to a much better place in life. Take a look!

Hoodia Passes the Test Under Intense Media Scrutiny

By Byron Branfield
When a new diet supplement hits the marketplace and people begin making claims of incredible weight loss, media hounds jump all over the chance to expose the phenomenon as hype. But when investigators from 60 Minutes and BBC News tried to dispel the buzz about Hoodia, they were unable to find the story they were hoping for.
As an appetite suppressant, Hoodia has come under fire because of its incredible ability to stave off hunger and increase energy using natural ingredients found in a plant that grows in the Kalahari Desert.
When journalists got wind of a supplement that was gaining in popularity and actually showing promising results, they decided to test it themselves to see just how real the claims of Hoodia’s benefits were.
Leslie Stahl, A CBS News correspondent working on a story for the show 60 Minutes, took a Hoodia supplement and found that unlike other dietary supplements, Hoodia left no aftertaste in her mouth, didn’t make her heart race, and never made her feel queasy in her stomach.
Stahl also found that the hunger pangs that normally plagued her at mealtime were simply vanished thanks to the Hoodia supplement she tried. In a multi-billion dollar industry that frequently has false hype surrounding its product lines, weight loss experts are amazed at the way Hoodia has been embraced by the media.
At BBC News, Tom Mangold approached Hoodia the way Leslie Stahl did – by traveling out to the Kalahari Desert and taking a bite of the plant directly. After he and his camera crew nibbled on the delectable growth, none felt hungry for at least 24 hours after consuming it.
To have journalists at this level agreeing that the Hoodia plant is a formidable opponent to fat in the war on obesity is virtually unheard of. Short of tabloid reports, most dietary supplements have failed to garner even a single endorsement from the traditional news media.
Many dietary supplements today include Hoodia in the primary ingredients thanks to the way this plant passed the media test with flying colors. To date, no other natural ingredient has generated the kind of positive response Hoodia has, which has undoubtedly caused other diet supplement companies to squirm as they try to downplay the extract’s beneficial qualities. It will be hard, however, with the backing of media giants from CBS and BBC News, to go against the plant’s praises and proof of success for long.

Sugar Substitutes: Licorice Root

By Denice Moffat
Licorice root (Glycyrrhiza glabra)-Licorice root (the ingredient in black licorice) is a substance of which virtually everyone is aware. Licorice is a perennial herb native to the Mediterranean region. Oriental cultures recognize licorice for its sweetening properties. Glycyrrhizin, the active ingredient in licorice, is between 50 to 100 times sweeter than sucrose.
Parts of Licorice Used: You can use the whole root (with skin or peeled), the dried powder, or the extract to naturally sweeten the things you eat and drink. It takes very little to attain sweetness. Many over-the-counter combination herbal teas sweeten and flavor their formulas with licorice.
The blue-flowering plant, which looks like a pea vine, grows wild in much of southern Europe and in Asia. Licorice is one of the most widely used medicinal herbs and is found in numerous traditional formulas in many cultures because it also covers up the gross taste of other herbs.
Uses of Licorice root: Licorice root has been used since ancient Egyptian times to treat upset stomachs, ulcers, asthma, chest infections, bronchitis and coughs. It is also good for clearing the throat, supporting adrenal function, arthritis and as is a mild laxative. Licorice root roots and stolons (peeled or unpeeled) may be used in its unadulterated, ground-up form as a primary sweetening compound. Licorice contains glycyrrhizic acid (also knows as glycyrrhizic or glycyrrhizin.
Glycyrrhizic acid is often touted as an ulcer-healing agent (although my clients hated it, so I no longer send it home with them. I also don't ask them to chew the tablets.) In one clinical study, licorice root fluid extract was used to treat 100 patients with early peptic ulcer. Eighty six cases that had been unresponsive to conventional treatment were treated at a dose of 15 ml (about one tablespoon extract) four times daily for six weeks. Positive effects were reported in 90% of the cases.
Licorice overdose: The bad thing about licorice is that it causes sodium retention which then raises blood pressure causing hypertension. Licorice acts to retain water in the body. Because of this, it can be a good herb for diabetes insipidus patients where the person can't seem to drink enough water.
Other side effects include edema, headaches, lethargy, and mild depletion of potassium which may result in cardiac problems when consumed excessively. Adverse symptoms of excessive glycyrrhizin consumption generally disappear shortly after a person lowers their dietary intake of products containing the sweetener.
Contraindications: Licorice root should not be used for people or pets suffering with cholestatic liver disorders, liver cirrhosis, hypertonia, hypokalemia, severe kidney insufficiency. It should not be used in women who are pregnant as it can cause an increase in blood pressure, but it is OK to use during lactation.
Case Study: I had just learned how great licorice root was for ulcers from one of the herb distribution companies when I first started practicing natural medicine, so I ordered a couple bottles of the deglycyrrhizinated licorice (DGL) which is supposed to have fewer side effects if overdose occurs. Within a week, I had two ulcer cases that week, which is usually the synchronistic way things happen in my life.
I didn’t hear back from the first client, but the second client brought her bottle back to me, almost completely full.
“Have you ever tried these?” She asked. “Well, no, I don’t have ulcers, but I do try anything I send home with cats as they won’t tolerate much and you have to be particular with what you sent home with them.”
“Well, you are going to try one now.” She said assertively as she opened the bottle and whipped out one of those stinky little pills.
I popped one into my mouth and chewed. “Woof!” I said, as I made a dash to the sink to wash my mouth out. “I had NO idea!”
I refunded her money and learned a lot from that woman. I guess you have to use licorice root in very small doses! I’m not so keen on sending home awful tasting stuff with clients any more. I’d rather send capsules and homeopathic formulas home which taste better. Some herbalists say capsules don’t work as well, but if you can’t gag something down, and it stays on your shelf the entire month, it’s not going to do you any good at all for correcting the challenge you came to see me for in the first place! I think I’ll just stick to eating the occasional piece of black licorice candy! I like the organic Panda brand you get at the local health food store.
Here’s an interesting licorice fact: Millions of pounds of licorice are imported into the United States each year, about 90% for use in flavoring tobacco products. Bizarre, huh? I wonder if smoking it causes high blood pressure. . .

Natural Remedy for Acne-The Amazing Green Tea

By Kevin Woodward
The natural healing powers of green tea are well documented. Green tea is unprocessed and is therefore rich in anti-oxidants that protect the body against free radicals. This helps the body guard itself against molecules that can cause DNA damage which can turn cells cancerous. These wonder-chemicals in green tea are the polyphenols and bioflavonoids. Much research has been carried out into other potential benefits of this tea, as well as helping to protect against some types of cancer, it can help fight tooth decay and assist in weight loss and is a mild antiseptic too. Perhaps that explains why there is evidence that it can be used against acne too.
The main group of people who are acne sufferers are teens, but it is by no means limited to them. Menopausal women experience hormone changes and they too can become victims to the dreaded acne. Acne can be a debilitating affliction as it can upset sufferers, creating anxiety or even depression. In extreme cases, acne sufferers are reluctant to leave the home. Not everyone is happy about coating their skin in synthetic chemicals so they seek natural remedies. Green tea can now be added to the list.
Just over 100 acne-ridden subjects were split into two random sample groups. One group was given the usual benzoyl peroxide cream to treat the acne whilst the other group was given 3% green tea extract in a cream base. The group using the green tea extract reported fewer side effects, allergic reactions and skin itching plus a greater complexion increase than the benzoyl peroxide group. The study was carried out at the Memorial Medical Centre in the Philippines.
Unfortunately, there is no independent evidence to corroborate these findings as yet, since this research is quite recent, however, given the fact that green tea contains so many known beneficial compounds, it seems likely that these results could be valid. The other well-known treatment is tea tree oil and there are already herbal products on the market containing a combination of the latter and green tea extract.

How To Enjoy Better Health With Natural Remedies

By Jon Arnold
As more and more “traditional” products and medicines hit the drug store shelves faster and faster, many people don’t realize the tremendous benefits that can be enjoyed by the use of natural remedies. Natural remedies contain only a fraction of the chemical preservatives, if any at all, compared to their traditional medicine counterparts. Although there are many over the counter and prescription medicines available for heartburn relief, natural remedies for heartburn may be just as effective and cause fewer side effects. You have probably seen the commercials on television for a new traditional remedy for something as simple as heartburn, but the ending disclaimers in the commercial list ten times as many possible detrimental side effects as the single symptom that it is supposed to cure!
Using prescription and/or natural remedies for acid reflux while you are trying to lose weight does make sense, and, in fact, some of the natural remedies may even help assist with weight loss, such as mangosteen, although the evidence from various scientific studies in on this topic is not totally conclusive. If you are looking for natural herbal remedies or nature friendly products, there are many oils and herbal remedies that should help you get started. There are herbal and botanical products that some experts consider as natural remedies and alternatives to prescription drugs. In fact, some medical experts consider the natural remedies to actually be superior to traditional medicines because of the notably shorter list of detrimental side effects.
Health enhancing, natural or herbal remedies should never be used alongside synthetic or prescription drugs without the prescribing doctor's knowledge. There may be some chemical conflicts that while not apparent, your doctor should know about and can advise you about. You may want to begin to incorporate the benefits of natural health into your everyday life by stocking your medicine cabinet with herbal remedies, replacing non-natural brand-name products. For example, rhubarb is one of the natural remedies for heartburn and indigestion used by Native Americans for many decades.
Ginko Biloba is one of the best-known natural remedies for Attention Deficit Disorder and has been shown to be an aid for memory retention. But just like with traditional prescription medicines, be sure you understand what you are treating, and be sure to treat the disease and not just the symptom. For example, before we jump into the natural remedies for your itchy skin rash, it is important to understand what may be the root cause of the rash so you can prevent further outbreaks.
For gum disease and other gum problems, vitamin D is also one of the best natural remedies easily available. Also one of the best natural gum disease remedies known today is tea tree oil gel. Overall, given its absence of toxic reactions and its effectiveness at promoting high-quality sleep, valerian root remains one of the best natural remedies for insomnia. Natural remedies for insomnia try to cure the factors, which results the sleeplessness and induce the various triggering factors that cause restful sleep to occur.
All of these ingredients can alleviate many of the symptoms of ADD, and there are a variety of natural remedies on the market that combine some of the listed ingredients to produce successful results. If you're losing your hair because of stress, on the other hand, then giving yourself some time to rest and relax would be the best among the hair loss remedies available to you. Remedies for lack of sleep, stress relief and relaxation, depression, anxiety, pain, weight loss, hair loss, skin problems and more are some of the most popular and in-demand herbal products currently on the market today.
Using natural detergents for diaper laundry is gaining popularity with young parents. Residues left in commercial detergents may be harsh, drying the baby's skin and causing further baby irritation. As you use natural remedies, keep in mind that one particular remedy may not work for you. To keep your body in chemical balance, it is important to use only natural remedies for constipation.
In summary, you may want to try natural remedies and see how they work for you. Results vary from person to person, but most people find that natural remedies work extremely well for them, and are also significantly less expensive than their prescription counterparts.

Aromatherapy: Rose Otto - Pure Essential Oil Aphrodite Martini Recipe

By KG Stiles
Rosa damascena (Rose Otto) is frequently used to soften and add lift to food flavors in many baked goods, gelatines, soft candies and beverages. Small traces of rosa damascena are used to tastefully enhance strawberry, raspberry, apricot and bitter-almond food products.
Here's an exotic and delicious Martini recipe made with Pure Rose Essential Oil.
APHRODITE MARTINI RECIPE made with Rosa damascena (shaken or blended)...
Iced Martini Glass.
Fill Shaker or blender 1/2 with ice.
Add 2 parts Absolute Vanilla Vodka
1 part strawberry nectar
2 parts liquor (Midori, Godiva or Cointreau)
1-3 drops of Rosa damascena pure essenital oil
Shake or blend well. Strain if shaken, or pour if blended into an empty Martini glass. Garnish with a fresh strawberry!
PLEASE NOTE: Rosa Damascena or Damask Rose from Bulgaria has the reputation for consistently producing the most sublime oils for therapeutic effect. I love the sensuous feel of Bulgarian Rose oil, no doubt, but personally prefer Turkish Rosa damascena with its lighter note. To me its effect is more freeing and uplifting to the Spirit and emotions. As with all pure essential oils its your personal preference that must be your guide when selecting an oil!
MY RECOMMENDATION: Purchase a small sample vial of an expensive oil like Rosa damascena (Rose Otto) to ensure your satisfaction before purchasing in larger quantities. Insist that the Rose oil be pure (undiluted) and produced from True Rose petals. A 10% dilution of a potent oil like Rosa damascena is well worth considering. Remember it takes about thirty roses to produce one drop of Rose oil. The aroma intensity of a single drop of Rose oil is quite potent and its excellent tenacity makes it long lasting, so only trace amounts are needed to produce an incredible effect, making it quite affordable really! Also the aroma of Rosa damascena oil matures with age like fine wine. Definitely in the category of an inheritance quality pure essential oil.
CAUTION: Please avoid during pregancy due to its hormonal effect. If you do want to use Rose oil while you are pregnant please consult a qualified professional aromatherapist, as some can be especially beneficial in certain situations.
PLEASE NOTE: There are many cheap, synthetic copies of aromatic oils, but these are not recommended for therapeutic use. For best results purchase the highest quality oils you can possibly find. Use certified organic essential oils, or oils that have been tested and are pesticide free.
Aromatherapy is a gentle and noninvasive complementary health care system used for balancing and synchronizing your body, mind, spirit and emotions to enhance your health.
